The 3rd Street Gallery celebrates its 38th year with a solo installation exhibition by Philadelphia artist, Carol Wisker.

Hosts: Life, Death and the Absurd, Carol Wisker’s sculptural installations, use fiber and textiles combined with furniture, mannequins and mundane objects to express her interests in contemporary social concerns, science and politics. Rendered with emotion and wit, the skillfully crafted multi-media installations memorialize human and environmental loss, explore bioscience, feminism and the psychological states of protection as well as poking fun at the visual arts world.

The exhibition runs August 3 – August 28, 2015 at 3rd Street Gallery, 45 N. 2nd Street in Old City, Philadelphia. Special events will include:

This August the Light Room, one of Philadelphia’s select photography organizations, will return to 3rd Street Gallery on Second Street for the sixth in an annual series of summer group exhibitions. Eight member photographers will present their latest work over a range of media and subject matter.

“This show has something for everyone,” says Al Wachlin Jr, Co-Director of the LightRoom and show organizer. “It’s always a pleasure to see the diversity of our member’s work, which besides varying in style and subject, encompasses both historic and alternate photographic processes, along with modern methods. And yet despite all these differences, we all in some way seem to reflect the exploration of humanity’s many dimensions.”

The eight exhibiting photographers are: Richard Boutwell, Robin Brewer, Michelle Cade,
G. A. Carafelli, Ronald Corbin, Richard Gretzinger, Annarita Gentile, and Al Wachlin, Jr.

The Light Room, founded in 2000, is an artist-run non-profit photographic arts collective in Philadelphia. Our goal is to foster an environment in which members can achieve their photographic objectives through the use of modern, professional darkroom and studio facilities, ongoing education, and the sharing of ideas.

3rd Street Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by visual artist, Neil Marcello.

Sweet Tooth (2014-2016) series comprises photographic prints that profile a selection of candy, based on the artist’s own personal consumption, and their availability over-the- counter to children and adults alike. This work considers the role of synthetic dyes and its influences within the manufacturing process of the confectionery industry.

The resulting images present a raw and subversive view through the whimsical nature of the artificially produced sweets, conceived and set within the industrial tableaux.

3rd Street Gallery on 2nd St announces an exhibition of new work by Philadelphia based painter, Kathleen Rose Geiger.

Squares, a series of paintings in square format, is the artist’s first series of paintings after a departure from figuration. The exhibition is comprised of still lifes based on iPhone photos and inspired by Instagram. Through cropped and skewed imagery, these paintings seek to investigate how the use of social media and technology influences our visual language. Pop art and printed imagery are featured heavily in the work. By photographing, painting, printing, and now, “posting” the same image over and over, the artist highlights how these images are recycled both digitally and by hand.

Rituals for Remembering is a new body of work using hand-made plant based pigments on paper. The series explores the relationship between biology and geometry, taking inspiration from the underlying mathematical design of organic life.

Strips of paper dyed with plant extracts are woven or pieced back together to produce collages foregrounding tensions between natural materials and hard-edge formal strategies.

Inspired by the philosophy of slow design, this project initiates a process-based investigation into the personal, cultural and environmental implications of pigment sourcing and selection in visual production.

New Works, features Brennan's latest paintings that center around relationships.

Regarding her work, Brennan states, "I start with a mark, simple and straightforward, but then there is another, a splotch of color, and some scraping. The tools are uncomplicated but as in any interaction, it is the relationship where the intricacy begins. The drawing itself is the experience that invites the viewer to share in the conversation."

Brennan's abstract drawings and paintings are known throughout Philadelphia and the region for their evocative color, strong and subtle markings, and emotional power.

I want to capture the periods when we break down and lose control; when we become what we fear and even what we hate. In these moments when we become completely vulnerable, we close in on ourselves and wish those outside do not see. My intention is to evoke empathy with what I believe is a common struggle.

The series expresses Ms. Unanue’s visual inspiration of a selection of compositions of an outstanding group of Chilean composers, who represent the “classical musical voice” of Chile in dynamic, vibrant and expressive works of art that have been created using different techniques and mediums but that convey the deep love of the artist's native land and her understanding of the magic of these compositions.

Philadelphia, PA –The Rutgers Camden Department of Fine Arts is pleased to announce Mixed Use: Extending the Terms a group exhibition by Camden Faculty, Students and Alumni which showcases the broad andinterdisciplinary range of teaching pedagogy in painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, and animation. The show is a view of how the department’s teaching has extended beyond the classroom walls. Mixed Use is on view February 5-25, 2016 at Third Street gallery located at 45 North 2nd Street in Old City Philadelphia.
