I’ve been drawing and painting ever since I can remember, working almost entirely from life. There’s no substitute for the thoroughness of observation this allows - translating 3D into 2D, capturing perspective, composing the elements, matching or enhancing the colors before me as they appear in real light - these are the timeless basics of art practice I use to show objects and scenes that interest me, whether natural or man-made.
I worked for many years as a product and textile designer, where I applied these practices to the design of commercially screen printed fabrics. The simplification of elements into flat divided color for printing influenced my own art, and currently I’m using screen printing as a next step, paring down my paintings to their most important shapes and colors, using layered transparency to keep some essence of their original media.
