This August, The 3rd Street Gallery is honored to once again host The Lightroom, one of Philadelphia’s distinctive photography organizations, for the eighth in an annual series of summer group exhibitions. Ten local photographers will present new images in various media and over a range of subject matter.

The Summer Sale is a group exhibition of smaller works priced at $500 and under, in a variety of media including painting, photography, ceramic, fiber and more. This is a great opportunity for first time art buyers, established collectors looking for smaller work, and those interested in unique gifts for weddings, birthdays and holidays.

3rdStreet Gallery presents From One Continent to Another, a solo exhibition and career retrospective by French artist Agathe Bouton. The exhibition presents twenty years of printmaking works created in Asia, Africa, Europe, and America. Curated by Amie Potsic, CEO and Principal Curator of Amie Potsic Art Advisory, LLC, the show begins on June 1 and runs through July 1.  The opening reception will be on First Friday, June 1 from 5:00 – 9:00 PM with an artist talk beginning at 7:00 PM.  The closing reception will be on Sunday, July 1 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM with an artist talk beginning at 4:00 PM.Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM and by appointment.

Wanderlust: Iceland by Jasmine Alleger

Recently Alleger's work incorporates her travels and she has begun a series of projects entitled Wanderlust for each locale that she visits. She asks herself "What happens when I step out of my daily routine and step into the unknown?"  Travel allows her the opportunity to slow down and observe a new culture and speculate about daily life there.

Her newest series Wanderlust: Iceland is a yearlong reflection of how a once sleepy little village has been flooded by visitors. She embraces the beauty of the landscape and quaint homes, while grappling with the impact tourism has had on the country. While speculating on daily life in Reykjavik, the capital and largest city, she was confronted with the realization that the entire city was consumed with the tourism industry. Its cultural identity was being over shadowed by a need to cater to its visitors. Development brought benefits but also negatives like rising costs and need to maintain new infrastructure. What will happen if and when this bubble bursts?

Jasmine Alleger has a MFA in Studio Art, 2013 from Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia, PA and a BS in Drawing and Painting, 2010 from Portland State University Portland, OR.

Primal Split by Conny Parsons

Conny Parsons presents a series of large oil paintings that are visually or physically split.  Parsons references objects in and aspects of nature such as stones, earth, wind, air and water.  Like or dissimilar natural objects are shifted or joined into a whole that is greater than the components. Like objects are repeated, reversed or misplaced.  Dissimilar images are joined in a cohesive way through color, shapes, movement, transparency, and repetition. This series is about the continual change in the primitive, natural world.  The artist allowed imagery to happen as she painted and playfully terms the resulting series as “Organized Chaos”. 

Contemporary Gestures, a solo exhibition by Edwina Brennan

“Just a mark.  I start with just a mark – simple, straightforward. But then there is another mark, then another, a splotch of color, some scraping. The tools are uncomplicated, but as in any interaction, it is in the relationship of these marks, of the color or lack of color, of the positioning of the marks to each other and to the edges – this is where the intricacy begins.

The works that I create are “drawings” – but they are not sketches, nor are they renderings of objects or experiences. The drawing itself is the experience. Each drawing is comprised of a variety of materials and of many methods of mark-making: from scraping to fine line to strokes and splotches of color. Although the art work is relatively large scale, some of the drawings are quite subtle and minimal, while others are more bold and expansive.  (This is due to the response quality in the making of these drawings).  It is an intuitive process in which each scrape, mark, and stroke relates to the next scrape, mark, and stroke within the borders of the paper.

Just as in the back and forth process of good conversation, the artwork unfolds to become sometimes a boisterous cacophony, at other times an intimate heart-to-heart, and still others a repartee. Also, as in a conversation, there is the courage of introduction, the first stroke; and the discovery of the response. Inclusion of new input can change the direction of the encounter, but unity is maintained by remaining mindful of the content – whether it is the border of the paper which are lines themselves, or the jots and swirls from the interior.

I invite the viewer to share in the conversation looking at and responding to each mark and layer of markings as they move over the page.”

Edwina Brennan: Edwina received a BFA from Rosemont College in Rosemont, PA, and also studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.  She has had solo exhibitions at Muse Gallery, Educational Testing Service Princeton, Sande Webster Gallery, Rosemont College, and Hahnemann University. Edwina has had work in numerous group shows including Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, Ursinus College, Settlement Music School, and Bryn Mawr College. She received many awards, including First Prize Fellowship at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Rohm & Hass Purchase Award at PAFA.

Sketches in Paint
Oil and acrylic paintings by Jean Plough

Sketches in Paint represents a journey from traditional non-realistic landscapes to bolder unconfined statements, scattered with words etched in crayon. Paintings vary from strictly geometric impressions to more spontaneous renditions. At one end of the spectrum are simple atmospheric color-fields, and on the other, freer expressions that include text. A scrubby, sketch-like quality of similar color brushstrokes is applied in layers to create perspective. The exhibition cannot be pigeonholed into one style; instead it employs several, although the transition is evident from one piece to the next. Inspired by a sense of place, as well as being open to the subconscious, Sketches in Paint presents a wide range of offerings.

Jean Plough: Born in Queens New York, Jean studied painting at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She also spent time at the Corcoran Gallery summer program in Washington, DC, and took part in a show at the National Museum of Women in the Arts called, “Insomnia, Landscapes of the Night”. Jean’s piece, “Hurricane/Gulf,” is in the Annapolis Volvo Collection in Annapolis, Maryland, and her work received Award of Excellence at the University of Delaware Biennial. She earned Best Abstract at the Philadelphia Sketch Club, and honorable mention in Scenes of Schuylkill for “Market Street Bridge”.  Jean paints because it allows communication with others, as well as creating a new perspective, a sense of space and the unexpected.

I am interested in exploring the body as an interface for how we navigate the world, how we use it to form relationships with ourselves and with others, and how it functions within our visual culture to help us more fully understand ourselves and the society we move through. The physical body is the lens through which I experience my own sense of self; my psychological and emotional state is intimately tied to the state of my physical body, whether it is comfortable, lonely, confident or threatened. The acute sensitivity of my body fascinates me, and has led me to create objects that attempt to capture how it feels to live inside my skin.

Eli Smith is a Philadelphia based artist working in oil paint. Most of his work deals with the human figure, with an emphasis on form eliciting emotion.
He draws much of his inspiration from his experience growing up with mental disability, specifically his Tourette Syndrome and OCD, as well as his brothers' Autistic Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. He uses this personal history as a starting point for creating his imagery.
Spoken in Silence is a series of paintings by Eli Smith which depict statues and sculptural work in some form. In the same way that the original stone works used power, posture and fidelity to describe the human body, Eli repurposes their forms for his series in an attempt to convey an emotional impact. He states that he wants to depict how we see ourselves through the imagery of these monolithic representations of our ideals, since many of the original statues were created as memorials or symbols of power and authority.
